03/03/2005: "old and busted"
When I bought the Mates of State cd last week, there was a promotional quote on the obi-strip type thing that said:
"Mates of State create indie pop songs that ooze with a love that is, like music, fragile and imperfect but all the more powerful because of it." -New York Times
That got me thinking. Am I most interested in imperfect things? I think I might be. I don't really like new houses, cause they seem so sterile and lack character. I don't usually go for super polished music or movies (unless its Toxic by Britney Spears...congrats on the Grammy :P) Maybe I'm tuned such that imperfect things seem more real and perfect. Take the Radiohead song, "Everything in its Right Place". For all intensive purposes, that song has nothing in its right place. Half the time it sounds like the cd is skipping, the lyrics are about sucking lemons and not understanding people when they talk...it really is a carefully crafted disaster. But yet I love it, and maybe thats why that quote above was so interesting to me; my love and the love for others is fragile and imperfect. Perhaps true love is really being able to appreciate the flaws in something ahead of its positive qualities. Anyway, cheers, peep yall later...
