02/07/2005: "ask and you shall receive"
Well, guess what I received from my dear brother in the mail today? Thats right, one of the smelliest pirate hookers you've ever seen. Thanks James!
Anyway, so I got a half-hearted request for response to the following questions from Kristin today (cause someone else made her fill them out). Since its a slow news day otherwise, here it goes:
1. Total amount of music files on your computer?
Well, I'm not the most organized person in the world, so my mp3's seem to be strewn about the harddrive. If I were to guess, I'd say around 25-35 albums worth.
2. The CD you last bought is: The last I can remember is Chin up Chin up - We Should Have Never Lived Like Skyscrapers...mostly because the cds that I want to purchase right now are still a couple months from release.
3. What is the song you last listened to before reading this message?
Oh geez, I should have listened to something better prior, this is going to make me sound like a tool. The last song I listened to was "Midnight Star" by Weird Al Yankovic from his album In 3-D. Its actually a catchy song about tabloid newspapers where you can read about the story of the man born without a head. (I love the WWN...the latest headline is "George Bush changes his name to God"...too funny).
4. Write down 5 songs you often listen to or that mean a lot to you.
Hmm, this is tricky. I guess I'll just mention a few songs that remind me of moments in my life whenever I hear them...
a) Clover Over Dover - blur
This is probably one of my favorite songs of all time. The harpisichord is just brilliant. This album definitely got me into all the britrock/britpop stuff I listen to now. The first time I heard it I was at the Circuit City in Fresno helping my parents pick out our very first computer (a Pentium 60MhZ with a 420mb hard drive) and I noticed that my sister (probably around 8 at the time) just sat at the listening station and listened to the same album over and over. I went over and listened to it for a bit and I thought it was tolerable...when I asked my sister why she liked it, she said it was because of the cover (it had dogs on it). A year later I was walking through a Blockbuster music store and I saw the dogs on the cover of the album and I was reminded of that time in Circuit City. I bought the album and fell instantly in love.
b) It's All Good - Mac Mall This song probably has the sickest beat of all time, basically consisting of a chopped sample of a girl saying "get your hand off my leg". Incredible production, and I can't believe Mac Mall delivers some of the hardest rhymes ever at the tender age of 15. I will always remember hearing that song while I was sitting on the floor of Raju's van my freshman year of college on the way down to Mexico for some bling shopping and lunch.
c) Sandstorm - Darude One summer I took an intensive (about 8 hours a day) German class to clear out 3/4 of my language requirements. Steve came down and we were hanging out and he mentioned that he didn't have any techno cds (this was right around when techno was starting to get pretty mainstream), so I took advantage of my university connection and typed "techno" into audiogalaxy (now castrated). We burned the resulting tracks and headed out on the road to go watch the skimboarding world championships. That was one of the standout tracks (although we managed to get a pretty great cd), and I remember playing that track very loudly in a parking lot. An old man walked up to us and asked us what the song was because he wanted to get a copy. Anyway, that was a great weekend.
d) Karma Police - Radiohead This was the song that started my Radiohead fan following. I was visiting my aunt's house for a thanksgiving break and my mom asked me if I wanted any cds because she was going to go out shopping. I had read that OK Computer was a good album, although I didn't really listen to any radiohead before that. She brought me back a copy, and I went upstairs to my cousins room to listen to it. I started with Karma Police because it sounded interesting, and as soon as the song started, I was amazed. I sat in front of the speaker and by the end of the song I was teary eyed, I don't think I'd ever heard anything quite so modern with such an interesting use of noise. An interesting trivia fact, the originally performed lyrics to Karma Police were different. The line in the album version is:
Karma Police, arrest this girl Her Hitler hairdo is making me feel ill And we have crashed her party
the original lyric was: Karma Police, arrest this girl She stares at me as if she owns the world And we have crashed her party I quite like the original lyric.
e) Nuthin' But a G Thang - Dr. Dre If I had to pick the song I've listened to most in my life, it would probably be this song. I easily listened to it 30 times a day during the eighth grade. My mother came to associate this song with my algebra homework that she would help me with and I think she probably knew the lyrics as well as I did. Looking back, I probably didn't know what half of them meant, but I was blissfully ignorant. My parents pretty much let me listen to whatever I want growing up, although I know they weren't always happy with my musical selections. I was told I wasn't allowed to buy any more Snoop Dogg albums by my Father after he saw some 60 minutes program on Snoop's murder charges (luckily, he couldn't recognize Snoop's drawl, so as long as the cover wasn't around I was safe), and my Mother would cringe whenever I put something with a parental advisory sticker to the counter (the only album I think I ever got turned down for was Cypress Hill - Black Sunday...I don't think my Mom much liked the skulls my reassurances that it was ok because it was full of profanity).
Anyway, I guess thats enough for me, although I did enjoy this hour long trip down memory lane. Off to pick up my overdue laundry!

Nuthin' but a G-Thang, definately on my list too. "when I'm the mike it's like a cookie they all crumble". Excellent. I love the bass line.
