12/07/2004: "q-u-i-k with no c style"
Just got back from the DJ Quik show at the house of blues in hollywood. Got back slightly later than planned because I ended up stopping at a rest stop outside of oceanside and taking a nap, since my ratio of driving in between the lanes and driving on the lanes was getting dangerously low. After about 20 minutes I woke up in a panic, thinking that I was still driving and about to hit something. Nothing like a little bout of the night terrors to perk you right up. Made it home the rest of the way uneventfully.
As for the show, it was pretty good. Minh, Jill and I were about 30 feet back on the right center of the stage. They had the big Fosters cans of beer, which reminded me of college, which was amusing. The concert was billed as "DJ Quik with special guest Wyclef Jean", so I was excited to see DJ Quik, but I thought Wyclef would be a cool opener to see. First on stage was some clown named "P Dub" dropping the R&B flavor. Not exactly a crowd pleaser, although he did take his shirt off, which made the crowd slightly more interested. Then a boat load of fools came on stage, none of which I really knew or cared for. Towards the end of their set though, they said that they heard a "booya" in the backstage area. In my head, I thought "Boo-yaa Tribe"? Then quickly dismissed the idea. What were the odds of having my favorite samoan rappers on stage? Turns out pretty good. They all came out and started with some new songs. I hadn't heard anything from them since around 95 when Occupation Hazardous came out. I always liked the track "RID is coming". Anyway, so that was fun. Then Shawn Anthony came out who I thought was pretty good but the crowd wasn't having it. They wanted Quik. Then the curtains closed and we assumed we were ready for the man to take the stage. And so we waited, and waited, and waited and waited. (All the time thinking, wheres Wyclef? Must've been replaced by booyaa tribe) Finally, at 11, Quik took the stage and the crowd went bananas. Quik ran around, shot champagne all over and kept perfect flow the whole time. Wyclef came out on stage and they sang a couple tracks together, which was cool. At the end of one of the tracks, someone ran out from the side of the stage and straight bottled dj quik. Who was the assailant? Why none other than Ching-a-ling. He did a track or two then quik retook the stage. Long story short, there was a champagne shortage and quik refused to come on stage until that was rectified, and the HOB has a midnight curfew, so the set was incredibly short. The best part by far was seeing all the B-walking and Wyclef doing a somersault followed by a handstand. Good show, although I wish the performances for the headliners could have been longer. Good night everybody...
